Most residential garage doors are lifted by tightly wound torsion springs that typically last a set number of cycles — and in Chicago-area winters, springs often break on the coldest mornings. A broken spring, frayed cable or off-track door is dangerous to fix yourself; the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns about serious injuries from garage doors and springs.

Don't DIY the springs
Torsion springs store enough energy to cause serious injury. If a spring is broken, leave the door closed, don't use the opener, and have a trained technician replace it — usually both springs at once so they wear evenly.
Opener safety check
Federal rules have required automatic reversing on residential openers since the 1990s. Test yours monthly: place a roll of paper towels on the floor under the door — it should reverse on contact. If it doesn't, get it serviced.
Repair or replace?
Springs, cables, rollers and openers are usually worth repairing. Badly dented panels, rotted wood doors or a door with no insulation in an attached garage may be worth replacing — get a repair and a replacement price and compare.

Common questions
Can I replace a garage door spring myself?
It's not recommended. Torsion springs store a lot of energy and can cause serious injury; use a trained technician.
Why do springs break in winter?
Springs fatigue with use and cold makes steel more brittle, so many fail on cold mornings.
Should both springs be replaced?
Usually yes — springs wear at similar rates, and replacing both keeps the door balanced.
